Hidden gems and subtle features


The user interface in VisionProject is continuously tweaked and improved and the layout uses panels and tabbed pages heavily. This article will give pointers to some easily overlooked features and hopefully they'll sharpen your workflow even more!



  • Panel/portlet header buttons - these small icons manipulates the panel or its content
    • Arrow up/down - Minimise or maximise the panel. A minimised panel will just show the panel header, no body.
    • Circular arrows - Refresh. This button will reload the panel/portlet. Important if you have made some change elsewhere in VisionProject that might affect the content of the panel.
    • "+" button - Expand the tree view, open all folders. Used in the Projects panel, in the Knowledge base, and the Reports.
    • "-" button - Collapse the tree view, close all folders. Used in the Projects panel, in the Knowledge base, and in the Reports.
    • "X" button - Close the panel. Only for portlets in the Dashboard and similar. Sub-panels in the navigation Panel to the left cannot be closed.
    • ">>" and "<<" - Show/hide side panels, like the Navigation panel in the main view, and in the Knowledge base.
    • "?" button - Context help. Clicking this opens a Knowledge base article in a new window/browser tab, where you can read more about the panel/portlet in question.
    • Cogwheel - Portlet settings. For example: In the 'My open issues' portlet, you can click the button to select options controlling the definition of what is 'your' issues.. which only affect that portlet.

  • Context help - this is available in many places. Look for a question icon on the panel/portlet/ in the page. Click it to open a knowledge base article about the relevant panel/portlet/page, in a new browser window. There are two different types of icons for panels and pages, see below:

  • Column menus - gives several options for sorting, selecting and presentation of the grid table. This is used in Portlets and in some Issues views (Planning board, Custom board, Issues tables under Users, Companies, Products/Services etc).      
    • Sort Ascending / Sort Descending - These change the direction of sorting while sorting on the selected column. Just clicking on the column header will also toggle the sort direction without needing to go into the menu.
    • Columns > - Shows a submenu with checkboxes. Select which columns you want to see in the table by checking and unchecking columns in the submenu. Checked = shown in the table. Column order can often be rearranged by dragging and dropping columns.
    • Group by this field - will divide the table content into groups based on the different options in this field. For example, grouping on project will show all items under their respective projects, in the table. Some groupings are not so useful though, like grouping on title - as most items will have different titles, you end up with a lot of groups, basically one per item.
    • Show in groups - This checkbox becomes checked after clicking on "Group by this field". Uncheck this if you want to remove grouping and show all items in a single block in the table. Clicking the checkbox will result in grouping by the selected column.




  • Project panel menus - These shortcuts are available by right clicking a project in the projects panel.      
    • Open project tab - go directly to a given project sub-tab under the selected project.
    • Create new issue - create a new issue of the chosen type in the selected project.
    • Copy - the project is copied.

  • Issue context menu - this is a general context menu available in issue-lists by right-clicking on an issue
    • Available in Dashboard (open issues / recent activity), the Issues page, Search results pages.. Generally, where there is a list of issues, you should have this context menu at hand.
    • This is a quick and easy way to edit fields on an issue without even opening it, and contains many options:
      • Open - Opens the issue for full editing, in its project tab
      • Open in new tab - Opens the issue for editing in its own tab. This way, you can have several issues open at the same time.
      • Fields - Opens submenus for editing of issue fields  
        • Several "Edit X" options. These will show a drop-down list with the available choices, with the current selection (if any) in bold text. These are available for Status, Severity, Priority, Developer, Owner, Sprint, Component
        • Edit Date(s) - Creates a dialog where you can edit start date and due date
        • Edit custom fields - If you have custom fields of the types text, single select list, date, yes/no, company, user(no support users), you can edit them here as well.
      • Add comment - You can write in a new comment to the issue in the dialog that shows.
      • Edit tags - Shows the edit tag dialog, where you can choose/create tags for the issue.
      • Edit permissions - Opens a dialog where you can select who should have access to the issue.
      • Sub-issues - here are a couple of options regarding sub-issues  
        • New Sub-issue - Creates a new issue which is set as a sub-issue to the current issue.
        • Choose parent - This opens a dialog where you can select the new parent for the current issue
      • Email reply - Takes you to the email reply page for that issue, so you can write a response immediately.
      • Copy/Transfer - Copy or move the issue to another project.
      • Add work log to issue - Opens a work log dialog where you can enter time worked on the issue.
      • New expense - Opens a dialog where you can add a new expense/cost connected to the issue.
      • Start timer - Clicking this starts the issue timer on the issue. This will then count the time worked on the issue.
      • Subscribe - Clicking this adds yourself as a subscriber on the issue. This way you can be notified about changes to the issue, if notifications are configured to be sent to subcribers on the issue.
      • Print - This opens the issue in a popup window, with the issue displayed in print view, and from there you can print using the browser print function.
      • Direct link - This shows you the direct link dialog, from where you can copy and paste the internal issue link or the support center issue link.
      • Spam - Mark this issue as spam, deletes it, and delete the user that created the issue as well. Use with caution! Meant for spam in support issues created from mail (as the sender is created as a support user )
      • Delete - You can delete an issue from the menu. Use with caution!
      • [Action buttons] - This section contains any action buttons that is available on the project in question. 
      • Voting - This contains a submenu. The current selected ptjp:
        • Disable voting - This disables voting on the issue.
        • Enable voting - This enables voting  on the issue.
      • Export table data - This opens the export dialog, where you can choose the issue fields you want to export, and to which format you want to export your data to.
      • Chat - This is available if the chat module is activated. This opens up an issue chat on the issue. From there, you can invite available users to join you for the chat.
